I think of you all the time
on a cargo train out of Sheridan
I think of you all the time
Out in the rain, out in West Oakland
on the coldest night of the year
Maybe I'll be the singin' mailman
if I ever get back to see California in the wintertime again
and you and your dear, sweet wife panning for gold out in Grass Valley
I think of you all the time.

Me and Kit Carruthers

Me and Kit Carruthers race across the prairie in the rich man's Cadillac,
fleeing over sagebrush, the oil refinery towers light the northern sky, painted black
And he said, "So you want another chance? Twelve noon. New Year's Day. The Grand Coulee Dam."
It's a rendez-vous we'll never keep, with him in the chair and me in somebody's sheets
You'll marry another barefoot in the garden, but he won't remember what you saw:
Trembling fingers holding a shotgun barrel smoking, calling out your name across the gulch
I don't know what I saw in the dark that night. A hulking silent mass amidst the boulders in the pale moonlight. A coyote carcass on the side of the road in the morning when I come to take you back home.
